Offering for 7/12/2020:  Regular Offering: $1,883.00;  The Mennonite: $39.00

▪ Join us for worship on Zoom at 10 a.m. (you will receive an invitation to the meeting by email, just click and join.) Any questions? Contact Roger Farmer.

Even though we are unable to meet as a congregation right now, expenses of the church continue. Please send your donations directly to Mary Lou Farmer, 1208 N 7th Ave, Washington, IA 52353. Thanks for your support.

▪ Thank you for your continued donations to the church during this time that we are not meeting in person. If you would like your offering to the congregation to be automatically deducted from your account and deposited to the church account, please contact Mary Lou for the forms to make this happen.

Picnic at camp, take 2! Let’s try again for a socially distanced picnic at the camp shelter by the pond at 12 noon, Sunday, July 26. Bring your own food; this is not a potluck. However dessert will be provided. Also bring your lawn chair for additional socially distant seating. If you have questions, talk to an elder. See you there! (Gay, Karen B., Mary Lou)

School Kits! It’s that time again. This year we will be collecting cash instead of the kits to send to MCC. Please designate “school kits” when you give to this project. Checks should be given to the church treasurer by August 9, 2020. If you would rather make the actual kit, go to the MCC website for the contents and take your kits directly to Crowded Closet. Thank you! If you have questions, see Mary Lou Farmer.

The  Outreach and Service Committee has distributed almost $3000 from the Everence Sharing Fund that was created in March.  A report of how these funds have been used has been sent by email to everyone receiving church emails.  If you did NOT receive this report and would like to read it, please contact a member of the Outreach and Service Committee (Roger Farmer, Tim Widmer, Carol Detweiler, Mike Bates).  Thanks for your support.

▪ Megan Miller and Angela Widmer will both be students at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary this fall. Washington Mennonite Church’s practice is to provide $500 per term (up to $1000 per academic year) to students at Mennonite institutions of higher education beyond high school paid directly to the school. AMBS will match the church’s donation up to $1000 per term. Since the church is not providing that amount from the annual blueprint, WMC is establishing a Scholarship fund to provide additional funding up to $1000 per term from the church. If you would like to donate to this fund, any money given will be evenly split between students at Mennonite institutions. Please send your donations to Treasurer Mary Lou Farmer by July 26, 2020 designated for the Scholarship Fund. Thank you for your consideration.

▪ Roger & Joanne Roth’s 60th Wedding Anniversary--Please join us in celebrating our parents 60th wedding anniversary Saturday, July 25, 2020 from 9 am - 11 am at the Crooked Creek Christian Camp Retreat Lodge. Outside, under the porch, scattered tents. Observing social distancing. "Drive-by" opportunity to congratulate Joanne and Roger. Light refreshments.  Light entertainment by grandchildren. They would love to see you!! Kendra, Erin, & Tyler

Hillcrest Academy

▪ Shuttle Drivers Needed | Hillcrest Academy is in need of shuttle drivers for the 2020-21 school year. There are two routes available: Washington route AM and PM on Mon and Wed and Iowa City route PM Mon-Fri. This shuttle is essential in providing transportation for students to and from school. Please prayerfully consider if you are able to help in this mission. Contact Rebecca Beachy Miller Rebecca Beachy Miller at rbeachymiller@hillcrestravens.org or (319) 656-2073 x20 with questions or if interested.

▪ Back to School | As we discuss ways to engage our students and nurture our community in safe and meaningful ways, we ask for prayers of guidance as we work together to develop plans for returning to school this fall. And look for our Back to School plan to be marketed the coming week.

Central Plains Conference

▪ Central Plains Prayer Request:  Studying the Bible, prayer, fellowship and accountability are important Christian practices that happen in Sunday School for all ages. Pray for those who are organizing faith formation programs for the next school year and for those who will lead and teach, especially in these uncertain and unprecedented times.

Mennonite Agencies

▪ Mennonite Mission Network Prayer Request: Praise God for Mennonite Mission Network’s short-term service programs that help young people deepen their faith and broaden their cultural perspectives. Pray for program directors as they plan for the coming year with so many unknowns.

▪ MC USA Prayer Request: #MennoSnapshots Melanie Neufeld and her husband are pastors of Community Ministry at Seattle Mennonite Church, seeking justice, change and protection for unsheltered people. Get a first-hand look at their ministry in Melanie’s blog, “The prick of compassion.” http://mennoniteusa.org/menno-snapshots/compassion/

Area Announcements

The Iowa Mennonite Museum at the Kalona Historical Village is now open afternoons. Because of decreased museum attendance and the cancellation of the Kalona Fall Festival a significant amount of our typical fundraising has been lost. We do have several cases of apple butter made at last year’s Fall Festival to sell.  By the pint or by the case, our apple butter makes a nice gift for family and friends.  Stop by the museum afternoons to review stories of our area Mennonite-Amish History and pick up some apple butter for friends.

Crowded Closet Thrift Shop is open! Join over 100 volunteers who are serving this summer. Shop, donate, and volunteer locally to support Mennonite Central Committee. Volunteer team is needed to serve customers on Saturday, August 1st. Ready to join us? Call 319-337-5924 or email Christine at crowdedcloset.volunteer@gmail.com.
