July 12, 2020

Upcoming Events:

July 12 – Picnic at Crooked Creek, 12pm

Washington Mennonite

Offering for 7/5/2020:  Regular Offering: $789.00

Thank you for your continued donations to the church during this time that we are not meeting in person. If you would like your offering to the congregation to be automatically deducted from your account and deposited to the church account, please contact Mary Lou for the forms to make this happen.

▪ Megan Miller and Angela Widmer will both be students at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary this fall. Washington Mennonite Church’s practice is to provide $500 per term (up to $1000 per academic year) to students at Mennonite institutions of higher education beyond high school paid directly to the school. AMBS will match the church’s donation up to $1000 per term. Since the church is not providing that amount from the annual blueprint, WMC is establishing a Scholarship fund to provide additional funding up to $1000 per term from the church. If you would like to donate to this fund, any money given will be evenly split between students at Mennonite institutions. Please send your donations to Treasurer Mary Lou Farmer by July 26, 2020 designated for the Scholarship Fund. Thank you for your consideration.

Join us for worship on Zoom at 10 a.m. (you will receive an invitation to the meeting by email, just click and join.) Any questions? Contact Roger Farmer.

Washington Mennonite has reserved the picnic shelter by the pond at Crooked Creek on Sunday, July 12. We are planning for a picnic (socially-distanced) at noon. Bring your own picnic lunch; this will not be a potluck. Also, you may recall we had hoped to have a meal together when Pam Gerig Unruh finished her time with us in April. Since that isn’t feasible, she will join us on July 12 at the camp. After lunch we will recognize her with several small gifts. To conclude our festivities on July 12, we will also recognize the retirement of Carol Detweiler and Becky Widmer. A dessert will be provided for the celebration! We hope you can join us! If you have questions, please contact one of the elders. Thanks! (Gay, Mary Lou, Karen B.)

Even though we are unable to meet as a congregation right now, expenses of the church continue. Please send your donations directly to Mary Lou Farmer, 1208 N 7th Ave, Washington, IA 52353. Thanks for your support.

▪ Roger & Joanne Roth’s 60th Wedding Anniversary--Please join us in celebrating our parents 60th wedding anniversary Saturday, July 25, 2020 from 9 am - 11 am at the Crooked Creek Christian Camp Retreat Lodge. Outside, under the porch, scattered tents. Observing social distancing. "Drive-by" opportunity to congratulate Joanne and Roger. Light refreshments.  Light entertainment by grandchildren. They would love to see you!! Kendra, Erin, & Tyler

▪ Dear WMC Family, You are so special to us!  You demonstrate the love of God to those you know and don't know reminding us to love our neighbor.   We are living in gratitude for the opportunity we have had to worship, laugh, weep and work amongst you these past several years.  Thank you for a beautiful send-off last Sunday.  We will do our best to take what we have learned from all of you as we begin a new chapter of life. The emotions that we are carrying with us are those of joy as we will be living closer to family and let's face it, sadness as well, because we will miss you.  But as the saying goes, "Even when we are apart, we are together." May the peace of Christ be with you all, Dick and Susan

Hillcrest Academy

▪ THANK YOU | Our fiscal year has ended and Hillcrest Academy would like to thank all of our supporting churches, those who support our school through their congregations, and especially those who have chosen to go beyond this commitment and give directly to Hillcrest Academy. You have shown that you are truly behind us and we are so grateful! With your collective dedication to our mission, we will move Hillcrest Academy forward even stronger! We truly appreciate the significant level of support we receive year after year from our generous community. You continue to show us that your heart for Hillcrest Academy remains full.

Hillcrest Academy Golf Benefit | This year's benefit on Saturday, July 18 at the Kalona Golf Club will obviously be a bit different, but we feel like we can put on an enjoyable and safe event. To register to play or to be a sponsor check out hillcrestravens.org/alumni/hillcrest-golf-benefit

▪ Return-to-Learn | As we discuss ways to engage our students and nurture our community in safe and meaningful ways, we ask for prayers of guidance as we work together to develop plans for returning to school this fall.

Central Plains Conference

▪ Central Plains Prayer Request:  Pray for the work of our camps, Swan Lake Christian Camp and Crooked Creek Christian Camp, as they creatively share God's creation.

Mennonite Agencies

All are invited to attend the Iowa Mennonite Relief Sale Annual Meeting on Tuesday, July 14 at 7pm at Kalona Mennonite Church. The executive board will be sharing financial reports and an overview of this year's events. Masks are mandatory for attendance and physical distancing will be encouraged.

▪  Confused on how to approach racism? Central Plains Staff have collected resources related to racism. If you need materials for a Sunday School class, for small group discussion or for you own reflecting, check out the list of resources at http://www.centralplainsmc.org/anti-racism-resources.html. If your congregation is finding ways to respond to racism, the Peace and Justice Task Group continues to collect stories. Email stories and additional resource ideas to: wilmajane17@gmail.com

Grounded in the words we read in Philippians 2: 3-4, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others,” MCC Central States offices and material resources center is closed to the public indefinitely. The realities of COVID-19 continue to change but the dedication of MCC staff to work for relief, development and peace in the name of Christ continues on. Essential workers will continue to work at MCC, but the rest of the staff will work from home. Your material resource donations (school, hygiene or relief kits and comforters, details at mcc.org/kits) are needed at this time and can be shipped directly to MCC when ordering online or dropped off in the 24-hour donation room towards the east end of the building (121 E. 30th North Newton, KS 67117).  In spite of the challenges from COVID-19, the global work of MCC continues. Your financial donations are needed to keep this work going. Give now at mcc.org/donate or by sending checks to MCC PO Box 500 Akron, PA 17501. To contact staff with questions please email us at centralstates@mcc.org or call the office 316.283.2720.

▪ Mennonite Mission Network Prayer Request: Mennonite Mission Network requests prayer for Jane and Jerrell Ross Richer and their family as they begin the North American segment of their two-way mission. Pray for them as they continue their Ecuador ministry from a distance and as they engage in teaching ministries from Goshen, Indiana.

▪ MC USA Prayer Request: Please pray for churches who are meeting virtually for their annual conference assemblies this month, including those in Virginia, Mountain States, South Central and Western District Conferences.
