Crooked Creek Christian Camp

To ALL former Crooked Creek Christian Camp Counselors: Join us this summer as we REMINISCE and tell stories, RELIVE our camp days making s/mores and playing capture the flag and REJUVENATE in the beautiful camp setting we’ve all known as home at THE REUNION!  August 14-15 $40/person for overnight and $25/person for day fee.  Review the schedule and register online at crookedcreekcamp.org. 


Iowa Mennonite School

Registration for fall semester classes at IMS will be August 14th and 17th.  All students planning to attend IMS for the 2015-16 school year should plan to come in, finalize schedules, meet new principal Steve Schrag, and prepare to make incidental payments (lunch, any class fees, etc.).  If neither of the two dates is convenient, please call the school office.

Free athletic physicals will be administered to IMS students on Monday evening, August 10th, beginning at 6:00pm.  All students intending to play sports at IMS in the upcoming academic year must have a physical on file before participating.

                                                                                                                      



Central Plains Conference

Attention Women:  CPMC’s Women’s Retreat at Swan Lake Christian Camp, VIborg, South Dakota on September 19 & 20, 2015.  “Time in a bottle” with Luann Yutze.  Luann weaves poems, prayers and scripture as she tells stories of sadness and joy contained in the bottles that have sat on her shelves.  Bring a friend and enjoy a weekend of inspiration, relaxation, interest sessions and fellowship in a retreat setting.  For a schedule of the weekend, check the registration form and poster that was sent to your church.  Cost: $80.

The Sower Prayer Request:  Please continue to pray for Max and Gloria Villatoro, their family and their congregation, Torre Fuerte.  Max is still staying with his sister’s family in rural Honduras, and Gloria continues to lead the church in Iowa City, work full-time, and care for the children.  To keep up with news about Max, see the Friends of Pastor Max Facebook page or the Max Villatoro page on www.centralplainsmc.org. 


Mennonite Agencies

MCC Mobile Cannery Dedication – You are invited to join MCC on Friday, August 28 to dedicate the new cannery.  A meal will be served at 5:30pm (please RSVP by Aug 14 to 316.283.2720/denisevoth at mcc.org), a free will offering will be taken to help cover costs.  A service of dedication will take place at 7:30pm (no RSVP necessary).  All events will take place at the MCC Center in North Newton, 121 E 30th Street.  Join us to dedicate the brand new canner as the 2015/16 canning season gets underway.

Thank you for attending our 36th annual Iowa Mennonite Relief Sale. We had a successful sale with over $200,000 gross revenue. We are sending $145,000 to Mennonite Central Committee for their work in responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. We hope you can attend next year's sale scheduled for June 3-4, 2016. It will again be held at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Iowa City.                    – Iowa Mennonite Relief Sale Board


Mennonite Mission Network Prayer Request:  MMN’s Anne Garber Kompaoré, based in Burkina Faso, is preparing for a follow-up biblical translation workshop in Democratic Republic of Congo this month.  Pray for the translators as they build on what they learned during a March session, and pray for inspiration for Anne.

Area Announcements

The Crowded Closet Thrift Shop, Iowa City, is seeking a full time Workroom Assistant.  This position would involve managing the daily operations of the workroom, overseeing donations for the shop, and volunteer jobs.  Applicant must be able to work in a fast paced environment, work both independently and as part of a team.  Excellent public relation skills are required.  For more information or detailed job description contact Betsy Slabaugh at 319.337.5924 or email crowdedcloset.ic at gmail.com.  Applications will be accepted until August 10th or until the position is filled.

The Iowa chapters of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) and Global Zero invite you to attend a multi-=media interactive forum on Sunday, August 9 at the Ashton House, 820 Park Rd, Iowa City from 9:30am-3:30pm.  Help us commemorate the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, then consider the risks and opportunities posed by the 15,000 nuclear weapons currently held in the world’s arsenals.  For more info, see the letter on the church bulletin board.
