Our Church

Happy Birthday to:  Mary Lou Farmer (5/27)

Offering for 5/17/15:  $1,766 (regular); $2,200 (kitchen);

Elder selection is coming up on June 7th.  Be thinking and praying about who you would like to nominate to join Myron Graber and Jon Widmer on the elder board.  Barb Ramsey is the outgoing elder.  Nomination ballots will be handed out and collected on June 7th.

Our summer series “Seeking God’s Will Together” begins next Sunday, May 31st.  ALL should plan to come and participate in our truly Anabaptist-style worship—listening and speaking to one another in love as we discern together who we are being called to be as the people of God here in Washington.  Each week of the series we will worship together around tables, hear presentations about why and how we discern, agree, and disagree together, and have a chance to practice what we’ve learned in conversations about scripture and issues.  This is important work!  The series will run ever-other Sunday May31-August 9.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for pie and ice cream!  Join the youth for our next convention fundraiser, a pie and ice cream social with a hymn sing.  On Sunday, June 14th at 6pm we will be hosting a hymn sing here at Washington Mennonite and afterwards there will be pie and ice cream.  More details of the evenings’ frivolities are to come!  Please join us.

Have you made your contribution/pledge yet?  Washington Mennonite’s Kitchen Remodeling Project fundraising is in full swing!  Our goal is $52,900 by July 1, 2015.  The measuring cup in the foyer will continue to fill up as we reach our goal.  Pledge cards and a basket for collecting them can be found on the table at the back of the sanctuary.  Please take a few minutes to fill out your pledge and drop it in the basket or come prepared to do so in the next few weeks.  As soon as we know we can reach our goal, local contractors can be notified so the project is on their calendars.  Work could begin later this summer.  Help us make this project a reality!

MCC Iowa Relief Sale

You are invited to the 36th annual Iowa Mennonite Relief Sale at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, May 29 and 30, in Iowa City.  Your presence and support of the sale helps us raise funds for the work of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).  MCC works globally in the areas of relief, development and peace building, all “in the name of Christ.”  More info at iamccreliefsale.org.  Invite your neighbors, coworkers and friends!

Garden Produce is needed for the Relief Sale.  You may bring it washed or unwashed.  Rhubarb sells well!  For questions, call Donna Yoder at 319.430.3728.

Today is the last Sunday to pick up the boxes and pans for baked goods brought to the Relief Sale.  Your baking supports the work MCC is doing around the world, in “the name of Christ.”  Contact Jon Widmer with questions.

Attention all MCC Alumni!  Stop by the MCC display table at the Relief Sale May 29 &30.  We have a special MCC Alumni sticker for you to wear during the sale!  Please don’t be shy about the sticker.  It’s simply a way of honoring the contribution of service you gave through MCC and a way for others to recognize you as an alumni of MCC.  IT’s a win, win – plus, the sticker might help you make connections with other alumni at the sale!  Drop by, pick up a sticker and then enjoy the sale!

Handmade crafts and handwork are still needed for the craft booth.  Items may include crocheted and knitted handwork, embroidered pieces, small wooden items, table runners, placemats, etc.  Items can be given to Jon Widmer, our church rep, or taken to the Johnson County Fairgrounds Thursday afternoon, May 28, or Friday morning, May 29.

There is still time to offer a meal in your home for sale at the MCC Sale.  To list your meal please contact Marcia Miller at Marcia at kctc.net, or phone 319.656.3242.

Area Announcements

Urgent Need: We have several dozen quilt tops for Nepal that need to be knotted.  We are planning a work night at Kalona Mennonite Church between 6:00 and 9:00pm on Tuesday evening, the 26th.  Men, women, and youth – anyone can tie a square knot – are needed.  We could also use a few sewing machines to sew binding down.  We want to get these comforters finished by the MCC sale, because we will have people to transport them to Newton, KS and Goshen, IN and get them to those in need.  If anyone has any finished comforters that they would like to donate, you can bring them along that evening.  Prayerfully consider helping, even if only for an hour.  Any questions, call Juanita at 319.656.3939.
