Myron Graber has consented to serve as an elder beginning this fall. Next Sunday we will ask the congregation for confirmation of Myron as elder.

This summer we are looking at the parables of Jesus as our theme. The children will be talking about the same parable in their Sunday school class. Parables were used by Jesus to invite his listeners to think more deeply about living God’s ways for all ages.

This year’s Vacation Bible School will be held July 25-28 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at Crooked Creek Christian Camp. The theme is Taste and See: God is Good! Each evening children will hear stories from the Bible that connect food and faith, watch a drama and do activities and games that relate to our theme. Christian Nurture is asking for volunteers to help make it a success. Please see the sign-up sheet in the foyer. Invitation letters are also available to send to children you know that may wish to attend.

There are a couple of flyers on the table in the foyer with information about Mennonite Central Committee’s response in the world. Check it out.

We need 10-12 volunteers at Camp Reece on July 27 to relieve counselors for one hour beginning at 6:15. It involves helping the campers with craft work. We also need 10-12 dozen cookies. Please sign up in the foyer if you can help or make cookies.

THIS WEEK:

Wed.: Elders’ Meeting at church, 7:00 PM

UPCOMING EVENTS:

July 25 – 28: Vacation Bible School at Crooked Creek Christian Camp, 5:30-7:00 PM

July 27: Camp Reece

We welcome J.E. McNeil to our worship service this morning. J.E. is the Executive Director of the Center on Conscience and War (CCW). CCW was founded in 1940 by the Mennonite Church, the Church of the Brethren, and the Quakers in order to defend the rights of conscientious objectors.

It is time to renew Timbrel magazine. The cost is $15 for the year. Please give your money to Mary Lou Farmer or Jo Ann Stout.

JPOG (Just Peace Outreach Group) invites you to hear J.E. McNeil reflect on her ten years in Washington DC defending the rights of Conscientious Objectors as Executive Director of the Center on Conscience and War. Join us at Mary Swander’s house, 5596 James Ave. SW, Kalona, IA (1/4 mile north of 560th Street SW) this evening, July 10, 2011, at 6:00 PM for a finger-food potluck and conversation (please bring your own table service) or at 7:00 PM for the presentation. For more information call Roger Farmer at 319.653.2547 or email Jane Yoder-Short at yodershortatnetins.net.

Central Plains Mennonite Conference is hosting a Sister Care seminar on September 17-18 at Swan Lake Christian Camp in Viborg, SD. There is a flier on the bulletin board with information. Martha Graber has registration forms available.

Thanks to all who contributed to the events of July 1 and 2 on the Iowa Mennonite School campus! By attending Jubilation Morning!, purchasing a meal, donating in the offering…all helped IMS balance the budget for 2010-11. The year was successful in so many ways, and we are grateful for the many ways in which our friends and alumni show support! Thank you!

To all of you who gave generously of your time and talents to make the Parkview 4th of July supper a success, “Thank you.” Through your efforts you helped raise over $5300 for Parkview. Some of these funds will be used for assistance in planning for Parkview’s future and some monies were given for repairs to help maintain what we are/have. This meal continues to remind me of what power we have when we work together and of all the wonderful, caring, giving, individuals that help Parkview be what it is and what it will become. Thanks to all who attended and gave so graciously. I wish I would have taped the event and was able to replay it to show how much fun and fellowship all had. Again thanks to all for your hard work in making this year a very successful endeavor. –Bill

Mennonite Mission Prayer Request: Participants in Mennonite Mission Network’s Radical Journey program are returning from Bolivia, China and England.
