This summer we will be looking at the parables of Jesus as our theme.  The children will be talking about the same parable in their Sunday school class.  Parables were used by Jesus to invite his listeners to think more deeply about living God’s ways for all ages.

This year’s Vacation Bible School will be held July 25 – 28 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at Crooked Creek Christian Camp.  The theme is Taste and See: God is Good!  Each evening children will hear stories from the Bible that connect food and faith, watch a drama and do activities and games that relate to our theme.  Christian Nurture is asking for volunteers to help make it a success. Please see the sign-up sheet in the foyer.  Invitation letters are also available to send to children you know that may wish to attend.

You are invited to celebrate the wedding of Caleb Detweiler and Heidi Gingerich, Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 4:30 PM.  See the invitation on the bulletin board.  Please RSVP by July 1 if you plan to attend.  –Tim & Carol Detweiler

ADDITIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

TODAY:  Ecuador Partnership Potluck, 12:30 at WMC

UPCOMING EVENTS:
July 25 – 28:  Vacation Bible School at Crooked Creek Christian Camp, 5:30-7:00 PM

Bellaccord, an a cappella male ensemble from Eastern Mennonite University, will perform at First Mennonite Church of Iowa City this evening, June 26; all are invited to the concert at 7:00 PM, with refreshments to follow in the church fellowship hall.  The group, comprised of 12 recently graduated men, includes Kalona native and FMC member Michael Swartzendruber; they are kicking off a 6-performance Midwest tour that will end with several performances at the Mennonite Church USA Convention in Pittsburgh.  CDs will also be for sale.

Remember Sing Hallelujah!, the musical comedy on the IMS stage a few years ago?  Well, many of the cast returns for the sequel, Jubilation Morning!  The show features the antics and shenanigans of the Shady Creek Baptist Church, set in fictional Johnsontown.  Mary Forney directs the performances, scheduled for Friday, July 1 and Saturday, July 2.  Reserved seating ($10) is available by contacting the school office (319.656.2073).  Please note that while the seating is reserved, an offering will also be taken during both performances, benefitting the IMS Annual Fund.  Also a part of the Friday evening activities will be the silent auction of several in-home meals (please contact Larry Swartzendruber to offer a meal).  Thanks in advance for your continued support of IMS!

The Annual 4th of July Parkview Benefit Dinner will be held (4:30 – 7:30) at Parkview Home in Wayland.  A turkey tenderloin meal will be served with baked beans, potato salad, homemade ice cream and dessert bars for a freewill offering.  Washington Mennonite has been asked to furnish dessert bars for 350.  Sign up in the foyer and talk to Karen Bates.

Mennonite Mission Prayer request: Thank God for the increase in Sunday School attendance at Zhong-He Church in Taiwan as a result of Marietta Sawatzky’s English classes for children on Saturday afternoons.  Pray that her students will encounter Jesus’ love through the stories that Marietta uses to encourage conversational language skills.  Marietta and her husband, Sheldon, serve through Mennonite Mission Network.

Mennonite Foundation, an affiliate of Everence, can help you support your favorite charities while also receiving tax benefits, through their new, easy-to-use donor advised fund.  To learn more, contact our Everence advocate, Roger Roth, or visit the Charitable Services section of Everence.com.

Crooked Creek Christian Camp’s annual canoe trip is scheduled for Saturday, August 27, 2011.  Mark the date on your calendar and plan to attend with your family and friends.  Call the camp at 319.653.3611 to register.  See you on the river!

Shadow Voices: Finding Hope in Mental Illness, a documentary showing how individuals live successfully with a mental illness, is being re-broadcast on NBC-TV stations from June 12 – December 12 at the discretion of local NBC affiliates.  The hour-long program was produced by Third Way Media on behalf of Mennonite churches.  For more information go to www.ShadowVoices.com.
