This summer we will be looking at the parables of Jesus as our theme.  The children will be talking about the same parable in their Sunday school class.  Parables were used by Jesus to invite his listeners to think more deeply about living God’s ways for all ages.

This year’s Vacation Bible School will be held July 25 – 28 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at Crooked Creek Christian Camp.  The theme is Taste and See: God is Good!  Each evening children will hear stories from the Bible that connect food and faith, watch a drama and do activities and games that relate to our theme.  Christian Nurture is asking for volunteers to help make it a success. Please see the sign-up sheet in the foyer.  Invitation letters are also available to send to children you know that may wish to attend.

The Outreach and Service Ministry provided an air conditioner to Kim Boileau, who has suffered medical problems, lost her house, and moved into an apartment.  Kim sent the church a thank you note, which is posted on the bulletin board.

The amount of Penny Power for the 2011 MCC Sale was $285.96 from Washington Mennonite Church.

Remember Sing Hallelujah!, the musical comedy on the IMS stage a few years ago?  Well, many of the cast returns for the sequel, Jubilation Morning!  The show features the antics and shenanigans of the Shady Creek Baptist Church, set in fictional Johnsontown.  Mary Forney directs the performances, scheduled for Friday, July 1 and Saturday, July 2.  Reserved seating ($10) is available by contacting the school office (319.656.2073).  Please note that while the seating is reserved, an offering will also be taken during both performances, benefitting the IMS Annual Fund.  Also a part of the Friday evening activities will be the silent auction of several in-home meals (please contact Larry Swartzendruber to offer a meal).  Thanks in advance for your continued support of IMS!

Bellaccord, an a cappella male ensemble from Eastern Mennonite University, will perform at First Mennonite Church of Iowa City on Sunday, June 26; all are invited to the concert at 7:00 PM, with refreshments to follow in the church fellowship hall.  The group, comprised of 12 recently graduated men, includes Kalona native and FMC member Michael Swartzendruber; they are kicking off a 6-performance Midwest tour that will end with several performances at the Mennonite Church USA Convention in Pittsburgh.  CDs will also be for sale.

Mennonite Mission Prayer request:  Christine and Phil Lindell Detweiler collaborate with South African churches to implement social ministry programs.  Pray that God would give health and energy to Christine and Phil and their three teenagers during the next six months as they bring closure to two decades of service with Mennonite Mission Network in African countries.

Shadow Voices: Finding Hope in Mental Illness, a documentary showing how individuals live successfully with a mental illness, is being re-broadcast on NBC-TV stations from June 12 – December 12 at the discretion of local NBC affiliates.  The hour-long program was produced by Third Way Media on behalf of Mennonite churches.  For more information go to www.ShadowVoices.com.
