Washington Mennonite Church will provide a brief worship service this afternoon, at McCreedy Home and Washington Care Center. Knotting Comforters: An all-church knotting party will be held at the church on Wednesday evening, January 26, starting at 6 PM. The sewing group works hard for the MCC Sale and other causes. Let’s support them with a time of work and fellowship. Bring a can of soup, (nothing weird), to mix with others and we’ll have soup and relish for supper. Everyone welcome.

The MCC meat canning committee thanks each one who made monetary contributions for purchasing turkey meat this year. Also thank you to each one for volunteering your time on canning day to help make it a huge success. It was wonderful to see everyone working together and enjoying the fellowship. We canned approximately 9,000 cans of turkey chunks which MCC will distribute to hungry people throughout the world. Thanks so much and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

Does the cold weather have you stuck inside, climbing the walls with cabin fever? Crooked Creek Christian Camp fans large and small: It’s time to start planning to save coins for the annual January Coins for Camp project. Your Camp Representative has the annual Coins for Camp Calendars to help you have fun collecting money for the games, toys, and other supplies needed during the camper season. Older “campers”, you can also join the fun! Remember, the church that raises the most money per elementary school aged child wins a pool or activity center party!! If you have questions, contact your Camp Rep (Jon Widmer) or the camp at 653.3611.

To learn about the Oakdale Community Choir, a choir comprised of outside volunteers and prisoners at the Iowa Medical Classification Center, Oakdale, you are cordially invited to attend the Thursday night panel presentation at 7 PM on Thursday, January 13, at the Iowa City Public Library, on the UI-Oakdale Prison Partnership Program: “May You Walk in Beauty: Connecting Communities through Choral Singing at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center.” This event is part of the University of Iowa Graduate Institute for Public Engagement, sponsored by the University of Iowa Obermann Center for Advanced Studies and the Graduate College. John & Loretta Kauffman have lived in this community and attended church at East Union for many years. About 18 months ago, John suffered from a stroke that now requires ongoing medical care and specialized expenses such as a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, mechanical lift, and hiring extra help. To help the family with expenses, a benefit brunch will be held on Saturday, February 19 from 8:00 – 11:00 AM at Iowa Mennonite School. There will also be a silent auction ending at 10:45 AM, live auction from 11:00 AM – Noon, bake sale and entertainment by The Great Bluegrass Herons. Donations, auction items and volunteers are welcome, and greatly appreciated. Please contact Phil & Judy Yoder (358.9648; pgyoderatgmail.com) or Marv & Grace Rempel (683.2681; marvgracerempelat netins.net) if you would like to volunteer or make a donation.

Mennonite Mission prayer request: Mennonite Mission Network’s executive director, Stanley Green, and other church leaders of color are gathering in Tampa, FL, today through Wednesday to evaluate Mennonite Church USA’s movement toward becoming an anti-racist church. Pray that the decisions made during this gathering, “Hope for the Future,” will guide our church into a truer modeling of Christ’s body.
