Reflection
·
What did you
hear in this story? What stuck out to you in this telling of Samuel’s early
life?
·
Boyhood: Samuel
was given to the Lord at a very young age. How do you feel about this? Today,
what does it mean to dedicate our children to the Lord? Can you imagine giving
your child to God, as Hannah did? Can you imagine being given to God as Samuel
was?
·
Calling: What
do you make of Samuel’s calling? Have you ever been “called” like this or in
some other way? Samuel was called to prophesy against his mentor. Have you ever
been called to a task this difficult?
·
Prophecy: The content
of Samuel’s prophecies throughout his life is foretold in his mother’s prayer.
Samuel’s work as a prophet was never easy. He was asked to prophesy for God
against those who would harm or withhold from God and from the “least of these”
in terms specific to his time and place. He was also called upon to prophesy
against Israel’s desire for a king to rule them and protect them. He assured
them that the one who ruled over them would be jealous and corrupt and take
from them the very best of all that they had. The people didn’t listen. What, like a king, demands more loyalty from
us than God wants us to give? What harm to the “least of these” might Samuel
(or we) be called to prophesy against in our day?
·
Prophecy:
We
live in a time, like Samuel, when it seems as though the Lord’s Word is rare. How do we know when it is God calling us?
How do we test what we have heard?
