Restore us, O God! – Palm Sunday

Prelude
Welcome/Announcements
Hymn – Praise Him, Praise Him, HWB 100

Triumphal Entry
(Matthew 21:1-11)

The crowds in front of him and behind him shouted:

Crowd North: Hosanna to the Son of David! Hosanna in the highest!

Crowd South: Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

Songs of Worship and Praise
Hosanna, Loud Hosanna, HWB 238
All Glory, Laud, and Honor, HWB 237
Offering
Reading – Mary’s Palm Sunday, by Katie Munnik

Jesus doesn’t make friends
(Matthew 21:12-17, 28-32; 22:15-22, 35-40; 23:1-15, 23-28, 37-39)

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up.

Crowd North: Who is this?

Crowd South: It’s the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.

Crowd Under 65: Hosanna to the Son of David!

They were angry. They said to Jesus:

Crowd Over 65: Do you hear what these children are saying?

Jesus announces judgment
(Matthew 25:31-45)

…Then the king will say to those on his right:

Crowd: Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink? When did we see you as a stranger and welcome you, or naked and give you clothes to wear? When did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?

…Then they will reply:

Crowd: Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and didn’t do anything to help you?

The Plot to Kill Jesus and the Last Supper
(Matthew 26:1-5, 14-30)

Deeply saddened, each one said to him:

Crowd: I’m not the one, am I, Lord?

Song
Become to us the Living Bread, HWB 475

Jesus prays
(Matthew 26:36, 39-45)

We pray:

Joy: In our joy, thanks be to God.
Concerns: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Jesus is arrested
(Matthew 26:47-68, 27:1-2, 11-31)

…And they answered,

Crowd: He deserves to die!

Then they spit in his face and beat him. They hit him and said,

Crowd: Prophesy for us, Christ! Who hit you?

…Which of the two do you want me to release to you?

Crowd: Barabbas!

Pilate said, “Then what should I do with Jesus who is called Christ?”

Crowd: Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him!

      …But they shouted even louder,

Crowd: Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him!

      …All the people replied,

Crowd: Let his blood be on us and on our children!
Jesus is crucified
(Matthew 27:27-66)

…Then they bowed down in front of him and mocked him, saying,

Crowd: Ha! King of the Jews!

…When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and what had just happened, they were filled with awe and said,

Crowd: This was certainly God’s Son.

Song
You are all we have, STJ 29

Confession:

Leader: Restore us, O God! We have hoped for many things.

South Side: Lord, forgive us when we have put our hope in the wrong things. When we have lifted up and believed that salvation would come through politics, or power, or success, or military might, or wealth.

North Side: Lord, forgive us when we have given up hope. When in situations of distress, or of anguish, or of injustice we have thrown up our hands and walked away, convinced that nothing can be done.

South Side: Lord, forgive us when we have failed to be people of hope. When we have failed to share with the world the hope that is found in you and in your kingdom. When we have failed to work with hope for the good of the world.

North Side: Lord forgive us when we have failed to recognize the one we have hoped for. When we have become so convinced of where we will find you that we fail to see you and to join you as you work in our community and in our world.

Leader: Restore us, O God! Help us to be people of hope, even in the midst of despair, and to share our hope with the world. (pause)

Assurance:
Leader: Our God is our true hope. Our times are in God’s hands. God’s face will shine upon us and God’s love will surround us as we pursue the will of God.

Benediction
Please leave in silence
