Area Announcements

Ted and Co. are presenting Listening for Grace at 7pm on Thursday, Oct 22, 2015 at Old Brick in Iowa City.  According to his website “Listening for Grace is a play about fathers and sons.  It’s a play about faith.  About the church.  About sexuality.  And it’s a play about finding commonality and listening to the story of others.”  In true “Ted” style, it considers serious subjects in a humorous manner.  Listening for Grace was presented at MC USA Convention in Kansas City this past summer and numerous people felt it was worthwhile, presenting various viewpoints and giving food for thought.  At some point, we at Washington Mennonite will want to have a conversation about sexuality in a structured, safe environment.  This presentation would give additional information and thoughts for consideration if you choose to attend.  Please prayerfully consider this opportunity.

J-POG (Just Peace Outreach Group) invites you to hear Joy Lapp address the topic, “Hope for the Holy Land; Seeking a Just Peace.”  Joy is Assistant Professor of Religion at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt Pleasant.  Each summer, Joy leads a tour of Israel and Palestine, visiting Palestinian and Israeli groups working for peace while seeing first hand the difficulties of daily life for local residents.  Join us to hear about Joy’s experiences and see pictures of the Holy Land on Sunday evening, October 25, 2015, at East Union Mennonite Church, 5615 Gable Avenue, Kalona, IA at 6:00pm for a finger-foods potluck and conversation (please bring your own table service or at 7pm for Joy’s presentation and discussion.  For more information call Roger Farmer at 319.653.2547 or email Jane Yoder-Short at wilmajane17 at gmail.com.

Fall Special Meetings at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with Anton Flores-Maisonet – October 25-27:  What does it look like to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in a world increasingly filled with the complexities of fear and injustice?  How is God inviting us to respond as the hands and feet of Jesus to the people around us who are rejected, hurting, forgotten and often mistreated?  Join us as we hear from Anton Flores-Maisonet, co-founder of Alterna, a bilingual community of Chirst-followers in Georgia devoted to faithful acts of hospitality, mercy, and justice.  Anton will be speaking during Sunday morning worship at 10:30am as well as 6pm Sunday evening (open to everyone, but with a youth emphasis) and 7pm on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

The Annual meeting for Mennonite Disaster Service Region III will be held October 30-31, 2015 at; The Ark on Table Rock Lake, Conference Center, 1190 State Hwy. East, Eagle Rock, Missouri 65641.  You are invited to attend.  Check with your Church office for a registration form.

Get your feather or foam pillows cleaned, sanitized, deodorized & NEW TICKING on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 from 8:30am-4:00pm at Kalona Mennonite Church (902 6th St).  Sponsored by the Kalona Mennonite WMSC.

On Saturday, November 14th, Dunamis Ministries will present the 2015 Newsboys “We Believe…God’s Not Dead Tour” at the Bridge View Center in Ottumwa, Iowa.  For more information, see the poster by the mailboxes.
