Central Plains Conference

The Sower Prayer Request:  This weekend the Central Plains Christian Formation Committee is meeting for a planning retreat.  Pray for God’s guidance and wisdom as they consider how best to provide faith formation resources for our congregations.  Today David Nickel is installed as pastor at First Mennonite Church, Lincoln.  Pray for David and the congregation as they begin their ministry together.

Mennonite Agencies

Mennonite Mission Network Prayer Request:  MMN partners Annette and Paco Castillo are commissioned by the Mennonite Church in Burgos, Spain, to begin a children’s ministry in Ivory Coast.  The Castillos, who began the La Casa Grande ministry in Benin, request prayer for the children’s health and for electricians and plumbers to mentor apprentices.

Area Announcements

Ten Thousand Villages, Iowa City will be returning with two pop-up stores this year!  The downtown Iowa City store will be in the former Whitey’s space at 112 E Washington St and the second location will be in the newly re-opening Schlabaugh and Sons Woodworking showroom in Kalona,  Both will be open from mid-October through December and will again need many volunteers.  If interested in bringing fairly-traded products to our communities, consider volunteering and send an email with the subject line “volunteering” to iowacity at tenthousandvillages.com.

The Board of Directors of Crowded Closet is pleased to welcome Carey Miller to the position of General Manager of Crowded Closet, beginning Monday, Sept 28.  Carey has over 25 years of management and financial experience in both private industry and church related organizations.  Please join us in welcoming Carey to Crowded Closet and continue to remember Crowded Closet staff, board, and volunteers in your prayers.

J-POG (Just Peace Outreach Group) invites you to hear Ray McGovern and Coleen Rowley address the topic, “Is Biblical Justice an UnAmerican Activity?”  Raymond McGovern is a retired CIA officer and a former co-director of the Servant Leadership School at the Church of the Savior in Washington DC.  Coleen Rowley graduated from University of Iowa College of Law in 1980 and was named “Person of the Year” in 2002 by TIME magazine.  Join us at West Union Mennonite Church, 3253 305th Street, Parnell, IA on Sunday, September 27, at 6pm for a finger food potluck (please bring your own table service), or at 7pm for the McGovern/Rowley presentation.  For more information, contact Roger Farmer at 319.653.2547 or Jane Yoder-Short at wilmajane17 at gmail.com

Ten Thousand Villages Iowa City is holding a “FUNDAY” fundraiser at Ride restaurant on Sunday, Sept 27, 5-9pm.  We will receive a portion of all food sales, so drop by Ride at 630 Iowa Ave, Iowa City, and enjoy a meal while supporting a local effort to establish a permanent Villages store in Iowa City.  Ten Thousand Villages brings fairly traded gifts, home décor, jewelry, art, and other treasures handcrafted by artists from over 35 countries.

Fall Special Meetings at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with Anton Flores-Maisonet – October 25-27:  What does it look like to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in a world increasingly filled with the complexities of fear and injustice?  How is God inviting us to respond as the hands and feet of Jesus to the people around us who are rejected, hurting, forgotten and often mistreated?  Join us as we hear from Anton Flores-Maisonet, co-founder of Alterna, a bilingual community of Chirst-followers in Georgia devoted to faithful acts of hospitality, mercy, and justice.  Anton will be speaking during Sunday morning worship at 10:30am as well as 6pm Sunday evening and 7pm on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

The Bethesda Bible Series usually invites one speaker, like Shane Claiborne or Michele Hershberger, to share their knowledge and passion about God’s work.  But this year they’re creating a gathering place to have conversations around this year’s theme, “Communities Caring for All God’s People: Caring for Self; Caring Across the Table (families); Caring Across the Street (neighbors); and Caring Across the World.”  The January 29-31 weekend will be a combination of featured speakers and those chosen from an “Open Call” for presentations and stories on relevant topics (like a Ted Talk).  If you’re interested in answering the “Open Call” see the poster by the mailboxes for more information.
