Our Church

If you would like to contribute your musical talents to the congregation during the prelude or the offering of the Sunday morning worship service, please contact Roger Farmer.  If you have relatives or friends who might like to participate in worship in this way, please notify Roger of that possibility also.

The Saturday kitchen served 107 scalloped potato and ham meals under the supervision of Edie Nebel last Saturday.  There was a great volunteer turn out.  Washington Mennonite will be in charge again on January 5th. 

Grant will be in Phoenix welcoming his and Edie’s new grandson Kyler Bram from Wednesday through Monday.

On Sunday, November 25th there will be an all-church grocery shower for Caleb and Heidi Detweiler. We will have a potluck after church to celebrate their marriage. If you would like to contribute to a grocery gift-card for them, you may put a check in the offering plate this Sunday and specify Caleb and Heidi on the memo line. 

The monthly sewing is postponed ‘til Nov 28th.


Iowa Mennonite School

The Compassion Club is sponsoring and hosting a Talent Show this afternoon from 3:00-4:30 pm in Celebration Hall.  The show will feature various talents and gifts by the IMS student body, with the donation-only proceeds going to support various projects sponsored by the club.  All are invited to attend.

The Music Boosters of IMS are once again organizing a fund-raiser at the Pizza Ranch at the Iowa City Sycamore Mall location on Monday, Nov 19th.  Come for an evening of pizza and fellowship, from 5-8 pm.  20% of the evening’s proceeds will benefit the Booster Club’s support of the school’s music program.

Youth Venture 2013 service locations are now posted! Mennonite Mission Network is looking for young people ages 14-22 who want to spend 1-3 weeks learning through service this summer. You could serve with local Christians in Colombia, South Africa, or Spain or in Alaska, Texas or Florida. Go to MennoniteMission.net/Serve for more info and click on Youth Venture.

Fierce Goodbye: Living in the Shadow of Suicide, a documentary produced by Mennonite Media (now MennoMedia), is being rebroadcast on ABC-TV from November 18 to January 20, 2013 at the discretion of local stations. The program includes families talking about the devastating impact of suicide on a family, experts on mental illness, and various theological perspectives about suicide. A number of Mennonites are included throughout the documentary and it is hosted by folk singer Judy Collins. More information on the DVD and book is at www.FierceGoodbye.com. The Sower Prayer Request:  Pray for all the children learning about God’s way of peace through the Shalom Readers Club.

Mennonite Mission Network Prayer Request:  Ray Epp, a MMN associate, wrote The Politics of Food dealing with care for the land and providing healthy food.  Pray that those who hunger for truth may be given new hope through Ray’s thesis and through his ministry with his wife, Akiko Aratani, at Menno Village in Japan.


Washington Area

The Washington Community Y is in need of donations for their annual Christmas Bazaar.  Please look through your closets and if you have something that is just lying around consider donating it.  They are especially in need of men’s and children’s items and also anything holiday related.  Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated.  Call 319.653.2141 with any questions.

Selah, a women’s sextet, will be singing at Bethel Mennonite Church on Sunday, Nov 18th at 7 pm.

Washington Ministerial is hosting a Thanksgiving Service on Nov 21st at the Faith Baptist Church at 7pm.

There will be an ecumenical Thanksgiving service at Faith Baptist on Wed, Nov 21st at 7 pm.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner: Everyone is invited to a community Thanksgiving dinner at WACO High School from 11am until 1pm on Thursday, November 22. We will have turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, rolls, jell-o salads, desserts and drinks. Local churches will provide the food. A freewill offering will benefit a local food pantry. On this day of thanks, let us come together with all of our neighbors for wonderful food and fellowship. If you have any questions or would like to RSVP, please contact Tamara at 319.217.2456
 
Cheese Balls are back!  After a year off, Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church is once again selling homemade cheese balls as a fundraiser for missions.  The flavors available are ham, veggie, pineapple and new this year, pesto!  Prices for the 16 oz cheese balls are $9.50 or 3/$27.00.  Please call the church at 656-2076 or email ldc at kctc.net by December 1 to place your order.  They will be available to pick up at the church on Dec 15 from 10 am to noon. 

Crowded Closet will have late hours the month of December.  They will be open until 8 pm on Thursdays.

Go to India!  Make a difference!  Be transformed!  Jeff Miller, interim associate pastor of Kalona Mennonite, will lead a small team to India, where he lived and worked for more than 2 years.  The trip is tentatively planned for March 8-23, and may cost up to $2,600.  For more details about the trip, contact Jeff at jsmiller17 at gmail.com or by calling 319.471.1279.  Space is very limited, so contact Jeff soon if you are interested.

On June 19th-23rd, 2013 The United Methodist Church is taking a van to Heifer Project in MO.  They have room for 4 or 5 more people.  If you are interested in going along please let Grant know soon.
