Grant and Edie are gone this weekend to celebrate a granddaughter’s first birthday.
Francis Litwiller has consented to be an elder for another term. We will ask the congregation for a vote of affirmation in next week on October 10.
Cesar Moya & Patricia Urena are working in Ecuador with the Ecuadorian Partnership. They are currently studying at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, IN. Cesar and Patricia will be in SE Iowa the weekend of October 9-10, 2010. They will be hosted by Grant and Edie Nebel. Planned itinerary for the weekend includes the following:
• Saturday, October 9, 2010 – 6:00 PM. Informal gathering at Washington Mennonite Church. You are invited to a time of fellowship with the Moya’s as well as an update on the Ecuador Partnership. Bring finger foods to share. Drink and table service will be provided.
• Sunday, October 10, 2010 – 10:30 AM. The Moya’s will be participating in the worship service at Donnellson Mennonite and enjoying lunch with that congregation.

Noel and Cheryl Smith and son Chris have just been granted United States citizenship. Their son, Byron, became a citizen earlier in the year before his 21st birthday. Cheryl was an exchange student of Roger and Joannne’s back in 1979-80 from South Africa. She and her family emigrated to the USA and lived with Roger and Joanne seven months and attended WMC while looking for a location to live and find work.
All those age 60 and better are invited to Crooked Creek Christian Camp for Senior Day at 9:30 AM on Thursday, October 7 for Senior Day. Wilford Yoder will get us started by sharing his presentation of nature photography and scripture. It is sure to inspire! In the afternoon, you can choose between the Barn Quilt Bus Tour or Camp Bingo! Please bring a dish to share for the potluck lunch. The Barn Quilt tour is $5 and space is limited. We ask that all those planning to attend call the office at 653.3611. We can’t wait to see you!
Dennis Bricker, Laura Ciaghi and Sarah MacDonald have recently returned from serving with Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) in the city of Hebron and the South Hebron hills of Palestine. They will speak at First Mennonite Church in Iowa City on October 7 at 7 PM. The 3 CPTers will share their eyewitness accounts of working alongside Palestinian shopkeepers and shepherds, women and youth, who are struggling to resist Israeli occupation, to stay on their land and in their homes, and to maintain their human rights and dignity. Light refreshments will follow the presentation.
IMS’ Fall Music Concert will feature the entire music department: choral and instrumental groups, ensembles, etc., on Sunday, October 10, at 3 PM in Celebration Hall. Come enjoy a variety of music, under the direction of Karenza Yoder; an offering will support the music department.
Several events for prospective IMS students are on the schedule for October, including a “Skate Night” at the Wellman Rec Center on October 8 (6 – 8 PM) and an “Ice Cream Social” at the school on October 12 following the final home volleyball match of the season. Both events are for students in grades 6-8. Come and check out the school, meet other potential classmates, and enjoy being together! Crooked Creek Christian Camp invites everyone aged 16 and up to join us for Climbing Club! We meet Sunday, October 10 from 5 – 7 PM in the Activity Center. Cost is only $10 per person. Space is limited, so call the camp office (653.3611) and leave a message soon. (All participants must sign a waiver; those under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign on their behalf.)
Ken Davis will be appearing at Celebration Hall at IMS, Sunday, October 24th at 6:00 PM. Ken Davis is a noted motivational speaker who has delivered his message of laughter and hope in hundreds of churches and conferences across America. Ventriloquist and comedian Ryan & Friends will be performing in Iowa Mennonite School’s Celebration Hall on Sunday, November 14, at 2 PM. Ryan performs across the United States and Canada with his hilarious cast that includes Harold and Irene, an elderly couple, Ardy the Skunk, and Jeffery. Clean comedy for all ages! Tickets will go on sale October 1 by calling the school at 656.2073. Proceeds will benefit the 2010-11 IMS Touring Choir as they prepare to attend the annual Choir Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico in April.
Mennonite Women USA is offering a Sister Care Seminar November 5 and 6, 2010, at East Union Mennonite Church, Kalona, Iowa. Sister Care Seminar offers training for effective lay caring in the congregation. The seminar will be led by Rhoda Keener and Ruth Lapp Guengerich. The cost is $35 and includes lunch. IMS Concert Choir members for hire!! Members of the IMS Concert Choir are available to work for community members this fall, raising funds for their choir trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico in April 2011. Much like the Work Days concept of the past, please contact the school office to hire one or more students for a day, an evening, a few hours…please note that Friday, October 29 is a ‘no school’ day, as well as the Friday after Thanksgiving—plus weekends, of course. Funds will go directly into the account of the specific student(s) hired. Please call 656.2073 for more information.
