Baby shower for Naomi Friesen!  Sunday, Oct 26th, there will be a potluck dinner and baby shower for Naomi.  We look forward to welcoming Naomi into our church family.  The Friesens, already feeling blessed by gifts from friends, family and church, suggest that buying a book for our church library to honor Naomi would be appropriate.

JPOG (Just Peace Outreach Group) invites you to hear Roger and Mary Lou Farmer describe their recent trip to Israel.  Join us on Sunday evening, Oct 26, 2014, at Washington Mennonite Church, 815 E Polk St, Washington, IA at 6pm for a finger foods potluck and conversation (bring your own table service) or at 7pm to hear Roger and Mary Lou’s report.  For more information call Roger Farmer at 319.653.2547 or email Jane Yoder-Short at yodershort at netins.net.

Church Librarian, Andrea Nussbaum, has been busy updating the church library.  Please look at the new books that have arrived and check one out!  Ervin Stutzman’s book, Jacob’s Choice, is a great read!  Surviving and escaping his own captivity in a redemptive story of peace and love, this historical fiction novel shares the tragic and remarkable story of Amish settler Jacob Hochstetler following the brutal murder and long separation of his family during the French and Indian War.  Jacob Hochstetler is an ancestor of many Mennonites in Iowa.

Iowa Mennonite School

The IMS chapter of National Honor Society is hosting a blood drive on Monday, Nov 3, from 7:30-11:30 am in the lower lobby of Celebration Hall.  Donors may call ahead for an appointment at 656.2073 or 683.2586…or may also walk in.

IMS students are busy preparing for the fall production of The Curious Savage (John Patrick).  In a world of greed and dishonesty…kindness and affection do still exist; that will come to life Nov 8 and 9, at 7pm and 3pm, respectively, in Celebration Hall.  Eleven students, under the direction of Mary Forney, will share their talents; advance tickets are available for $8 (adults) or $5 (students).  Please contact the school.

Central Plains Conference

We have felt the strong prayers of support from CPMC congregations during Carol Detweiler’s diagnosis with ovarian cancer and throughout her chemo treatments.  We are very grateful for your prayers and the outpouring of support we have felt.  Now we invite you to rejoice and thank God with us for Carol’s renewed health.  SCANS and doctor visit following Carol’s laswt chemo treatment revealed no major concerns.  Repeat SCANS are scheduled in six months.  For this we are very grateful and invite you to join us in giving thanks and praise to God.  Thank you

       – Tim and Carol Detweiler.

The Sower Prayer Request:  Pray for Julesburg (Colorado) Mennonite Church as they install a new pastor, Jack Norris, next Sunday.  Pray for Jack and the congregation as they begin to minister together as witnesses to God’s reign in Julesburg.

MC USA Announcement:  DREAMer scholarship funds available!  Scholarship funds are now available from MC USA to help with college or trade school tuition costs for undocumented young adults who are part of a Mennonite congregation or attend a Mennonite college/university.  These funds come from the DREAMer Fund, which was originally established to help DREAMers apply for deferred action to be able to live and work legally in the US.  At the MC USA 2013 convention in Phoenix, more than $27,000 was raised for this fund.  However, due to the uncertain future of immigration reform, many DREAMers have been hesitant to apply, so the use of the fund is being expanded to include educational assistance.  The first deadline date has been extended to Oct 15 for 2014 only.  See DREAMer Scholarship Fund at http://www.mennoniteusa.org/what-we-do/immigration/.

Mennonite Mission Network Prayer Request: Praise God for Alfonsina and José Oyanguren, who live and work in the Argentine Chaco through MMN.  Pray for the outreach of the churches they serve as the movie Jesus has recently been dubbed in the Toba Qom language.

MEA Prayers for Faith and Learning:  Thank God for the most diverse student enrollment at Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, PA, in history.  Pray for a welcoming community and for opportunities to gain respect and understanding of others.
